How Does Insulating Oil Compare To Protective Oil In Carbon Ink PCB?
- The carbon contacts and solder mask openings in insulating oil should be trimmed 0.10mm away from either side of the line pad.
It is not compulsory in protective oil to trim the mask but the carbon bridge can be covered and the rest trimmed.
- The insulating oil process occurs prior to the carbon oil while the protective oil process occurs after the carbon oil.
- The lowest distance between the protective oil and insulating oil with the opening pad of the solder mask is generally 0.30mm.
- The protective and insulating oils should be above 0.50mm bigger than the carbon oil during manufacture on one side.
Why Can’t Carbon Ink PCB Be Produced With Immersion Silver?
Producing Carbon Ink PCB using immersion silver (or immersion tin) is a design risk when it comes to manufacturing.
This is because printing the carbon ink after the immersion silver will result in the contamination of the pad surface.
Alternatively, the carbon ink can be printed first followed by the immersion silver. This will allow for the silver to stick to the carbon inks surface.
What Are The Components Of Carbon Ink PCB?
The essential components of a Carbon Ink PCB include:
- Batterie - this is the most basic carbon element and serves the purpose of supplying voltage to the whole PCB
- Resistors – they are used to regulate the electric current within the PCB and giving resistance to the Carbon Ink PCB when current flows.
The value of the resistors is dictated by specific color codes.
- LED - the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) of the Carbon Ink PCB are powered when current flows through them.
The current can only flow in a single direction.
- Transistor - the role of a transistor in a Carbon Ink PCB is to amplify the charge.
- Capacitors – the main function of capacitors is to harbor the electrical charge.
- Inductors – inductors are used to store charge in the Carbon Ink PCB.
They are also a source of resistance and they also change the current while providing the resistance.
- Switches – the switches enable the current to either flow or get blocked when they are turned on or off.
- Substrate – it is the PCBs main component and gives it its toughness.
What Are The Features Of Carbon Ink PCB?

Minimum Alignment Tolerance Of Carbon Oil
The carbon oil should basically be 6mil or 8mil bigger than the copper pad because of oil leakages, alignment tolerances and to prevent exposure of the copper.
It is a requisite to have a 6-8mil gap between the window of the carbon oil and the adjacent copper pattern.
This prevents the carbon oil from concealing the copper surrounding it thus avoiding short circuiting the Carbon Ink PCB.
Carbon Ink Gap

What Are The Process Control Methods In Production Of Carbon Ink PCB?
The following aspects should be strictly adhered to during the process control of Carbon Ink PCB:
- Each baking Carbon PCBs temperature and time should be clearly documented by the operator. He should also notify the Quality Assurance team to adhesion test and carbon resistance value analysis when the PCB cools down.
- Operators must have hand gloves all the time during production.
- Before printing, any pollutant, oxides and oils must be cleaned from the board before printing. Quality Assurance must physically check all carbon oil boards before they proceed to the production line.
- During production, relevant operating instructions will dictate each equipment and machines process parameters to be carried out.
They should not be changed during the entire production process.
- Before using the carbon oil, it has to be uniformly stirred. A viscometer while ascertain if its viscosity lies within the desired range.
The cover should be immediately sealed after using the ink.
- Cleanliness of all equipment and machines is mandatory. Their surfaces should contain no form of dust, oil or any form of debris.
- The operation procedures dictate the ink return suction pressure and the screen printing speed (centered on the printing effect).
What Are The Types Of Contacts Used In Carbon Ink PCB?

How Is Sheet Resistance Measured In A Carbon Ink PCB?
Sheet resistance can be described as the deposited film resistance which has a uniform thickness.
To reduce the chances of contact resistance, a four-point probe is used to measure it.
Basically, the two probes are supplied with constant current while measuring the potential of the remaining two probes using a voltmeter with a high impedance rating.
Another way is to have the opposite edges of a square on the Carbon Ink PCB supplied with bus bars and measuring the resistance across the square area.
What Are The Manufacturing Challenges Of Carbon Ink PCB?
Carbon bridges and Carbon oil buttons can commonly be found on the single layer Carbon Ink PCB.
Copper can be easily exposed during production when it is placed beneath the carbon oil buttons.
To avoid exposure of copper, it is advisable to shrink the carbon keyboard after cutting the lamination and just before printing.
If the shrinkage treatment does not occur prior to printing,
then shrinkage will happen after application of green solder mask, etching and during the bridge process of carbon oil.
Current leakages are mainly caused by the copper powder situated between the lines.
The copper powder stays between the lines because of the intensity of the grinding pressure and wrong direction.
No adverse effect is produced by the copper powder if the Carbon Ink PCB exists in a dry surrounding.
However, humid environments tend to lead to micro-short circuits during the process of electroplating.
Green Oil Solder Mask
Due to the heavy presence of garbage found in bridge oil and green oil, conductivity occurs.
To counter this, the screen mesh size used in the bridge oil should not be very small (normally 90-120T).
The environment surrounding it should also be very clean.
