Was ist Carbon Ink PCB?

Dieser Kurs ist ein Leiterplatte which has been coated using conductive ink which is carbon-based (carbon ink) on its substrate.

The ink has been cured and together with conductive pattern of the carbon film form a PCB.

The carbon acts as a conductor connecting two Leiterplattenspuren on the board, components and traces or connecting a resistor between the traces.

Kohletinte PCB

Carbon ink PCB

When producing Carbon Ink PCB, major consideration is put on its resistance control, controlling the printing and baking.

Different circuits including starre Leiterplatte, Rigid-Flex-Leiterplatte und Flexible Leiterplatte can all have carbon ink printed on them.

The carbon ink has a very fine resolution of around 100µm trace width making it useful in PCBs like remote controls, RF shielding and industrial engine control.

What Are The Reasons For Carbon Ink PCB Fracture?

Over Addition of Diluent

Adding more than enough diluent during manufacture results in the cracking of carbon oil bridge.

Normally, carbon oil can be directly applied without a diluent.

In the event that diluent has to be added to carbon oil, then it should be done observing the correct proportions.

The carbon viscosity significantly reduces when the diluent is excessively added.

High resistance will lead to the board cracking and even result in a totally open circuit.

The most appropriate way is to add diluent based on manufacturing criteria and supplier recommendations.

Poorly Set Baking Temperature

Speedily baking carbon oil at extremely high temperatures results in a heating difference on line carbon oil and the carbon oil in other places.

This leads to occurrence of cracks when curing is carried out.

To avert this, the oven temperature must be gradually raised during baking.

Why Do Bridge Oil Cracks Lead To Leakages In Carbon Ink PCB?

The following are reasons why cracks in Bridge oil lead to leakages:

  • The bridge oil has a very high peel force
  • The carbon Ink PCB board may be bent
  • Side etching leads to formation of a vacancy near the edges of the electroplated plate lines.

How Does Carbon Ink PCB Compare To Hard Gold PCB?

In terms of cost, Hard Gold is a very expensive surface finish and the conductive carbon in is a cost efficient replacement for it because of lower manufacturing costs.

The Carbon Ink PCB is fairly cheap with very high robustness because of the reduced material cost of Carbon Ink.

Figure 2 carbon ink PCB

Carbon ink PCB

Carbon Ink PCB has a very simple plating process compared to Hard Gold PCB that entails a long electrolytic bath.

The Carbon Ink PCB printing involves a basic screen printing process.

In terms of robustness, the Carbon Ink PCB is able to withstand an excess of 1 million operations of keyboard push button.

They can also withstand over 100 edge connector insertion operations without manifesting any increase in resistance or showing any form of wear,

Additionally, the Carbon Ink PCB has a very good viscous stability on its circuit surface for applications in warm places.

Hartgold PCB

They need very efficient printing properties to allow for equal copper button pads coverage.

One major disadvantage of Carbon Ink PCB over Hard Gold PCB is that the carbon conductive ink that has been cured and dried, must be able to endure extreme process steps like soldering and solvent cleaning.

This should occur without any loss in its conductivity and adhesion therefore extreme caution should be taken and consideration given for different cleaning steps during assembly.

What Are The Advantages Of Carbon Ink PCB?

Some of the advantages of Carbon Ink PCB include:

  1. The printing of the Carbon Ink PCB has been certified as environment-friendly therefore greatly reducing the chances of soil, air or water pollution.
  2. When it comes to cost, Carbon Ink PCB is much cheaper compared to most PCBs and yet its performance is very stable.
  3. They are easy to manufacture under one-stop service that will include manufacturing and assembly of components.

What Are The Resistance Requirements Of Carbon Oil Used In Carbon Ink PCBs?

The thickness and composition of Carbon oil are the only relation to its resistance.

In order to achieve the most desired resistance requirements, three aspects have to be put into consideration:

  1. After printing, a realistic thickness of around 0.01 to 0.025mm should be achieved.
  2. It has to be fully baked at oven temperatures of 150-170°C for about 30-60 minutes
  • The carbon oil has to have a sensible square resistance that satisfies the process requirements.

What Is The Process Of Applying Conductive Carbon Ink Using Screen-Printing?

The process of applying conductive carbon ink using screen printing is as follows:

  • A photosensitive film mask is applied onto the fabric screen and cured using UV
  • The PCB panel is then placed on the frame of the printing machine
  • The speed and squeegee pressures are set
  • Test print is carried out after one panel is covered using a transparent foil that is sticky
  • Carry out the carbon print upon removal of the transparent foil
  • Panel is cured at 150° for 45 minutes

How Does Insulating Oil Compare To Protective Oil In Carbon Ink PCB?

  • The carbon contacts and solder mask openings in insulating oil should be trimmed 0.10mm away from either side of the line pad.

It is not compulsory in protective oil to trim the mask but the carbon bridge can be covered and the rest trimmed.

  • The insulating oil process occurs prior to the carbon oil while the protective oil process occurs after the carbon oil.
  • The lowest distance between the protective oil and insulating oil with the opening pad of the solder mask is generally 0.30mm.
  • The protective and insulating oils should be above 0.50mm bigger than the carbon oil during manufacture on one side.

Why Can’t Carbon Ink PCB Be Produced With Immersion Silver?

Producing Carbon Ink PCB using immersion silver (or immersion tin) is a design risk when it comes to manufacturing.

This is because printing the carbon ink after the immersion silver will result in the contamination of the pad surface.

Alternatively, the carbon ink can be printed first followed by the immersion silver. This will allow for the silver to stick to the carbon inks surface.

What Are The Components Of Carbon Ink PCB?

The essential components of a Carbon Ink PCB include:

  • Batterie - this is the most basic carbon element and serves the purpose of supplying voltage to the whole PCB
  • Resistors – they are used to regulate the electric current within the PCB and giving resistance to the Carbon Ink PCB when current flows.

The value of the resistors is dictated by specific color codes.

  • LED - the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) of the Carbon Ink PCB are powered when current flows through them.

The current can only flow in a single direction.

  • Transistor - the role of a transistor in a Carbon Ink PCB is to amplify the charge.
  • Capacitors – the main function of capacitors is to harbor the electrical charge.
  • Inductors – inductors are used to store charge in the Carbon Ink PCB.

They are also a source of resistance and they also change the current while providing the resistance.

  • Switches – the switches enable the current to either flow or get blocked when they are turned on or off.
  • Substrate – it is the PCBs main component and gives it its toughness.

What Are The Features Of Carbon Ink PCB?

Some of the features of the Carbon Ink PCB include:

Minimum Alignment Tolerance Of Carbon Oil

The carbon oil should basically be 6mil or 8mil bigger than the copper pad because of oil leakages, alignment tolerances and to prevent exposure of the copper.

It is a requisite to have a 6-8mil gap between the window of the carbon oil and the adjacent copper pattern.

This prevents the carbon oil from concealing the copper surrounding it thus avoiding short circuiting the Carbon Ink PCB.

Carbon Ink Gap

Due to the exemplary electrical conductivity Carbon Ink PCB, a gap is required by the carbon oil to make sure no short circuit occurs.

Normally, the gap should have a minimum dimension of 8-12mil for the completed product. The gap is however increase when opening a film.

Carbon Oil Thickness

The initial screen print of a Carbon Ink PCB should contain a 0.3-1.0 mil carbon oil thickness with a tolerance of ± 0.3 mil.

In the event that carbon oil thickness is set to 1.0mil, then the carbon oil will be reprinted twice.

How Is Carbon Ink PCB Applied In Conductive Rubber Keypads?

Industrial control products and consumer electronics heavily rely on conductive rubber keypads because of their low cost and reliability.

Conductive rubber keypads are created by having an angled webbing made around a switch center.

The webbing deforms upon pressing the switch producing a tactile reaction.

The webbing resumes its neutral position the moment pressure is released from the switch.

When making electronic switches, the carbon tactile key has a carbon pill at the base of the switch. When pressure is applied on the web, the carbon tactile key touches the PCB.

A protective contact surface is created using the conductive carbon ink for touch key contacts.

As an economy finish, screen-printing technology is used to apply the carbon ink onto the PCB as a surface finish (an alternative replacement for the expensive hard gold finish)

Printed resistance is created by producing the PCB using cross-over copper conductors.

Carbon Ink PCB is applicable in the manufacture of low voltage circuits, heating elements, electromechanical keyboards and other devices like switch contacts.

What Are The Different Types Of Carbon Ink PCBs?

The different types of Carbon Ink PCB include:

  • 4 Layer Carbon Ink PCB – this type of PCB is made using a board thickness ranging from 0.4-1.6mm.

What Are The Process Control Methods In Production Of Carbon Ink PCB?

The following aspects should be strictly adhered to during the process control of Carbon Ink PCB:

  • Each baking Carbon PCBs temperature and time should be clearly documented by the operator. He should also notify the Quality Assurance team to adhesion test and carbon resistance value analysis when the PCB cools down.
  • Operators must have hand gloves all the time during production.
  • Before printing, any pollutant, oxides and oils must be cleaned from the board before printing. Quality Assurance must physically check all carbon oil boards before they proceed to the production line.
  • During production, relevant operating instructions will dictate each equipment and machines process parameters to be carried out.

They should not be changed during the entire production process.

  • Before using the carbon oil, it has to be uniformly stirred. A viscometer while ascertain if its viscosity lies within the desired range.

The cover should be immediately sealed after using the ink.

  • Cleanliness of all equipment and machines is mandatory. Their surfaces should contain no form of dust, oil or any form of debris.
  • The operation procedures dictate the ink return suction pressure and the screen printing speed (centered on the printing effect).

What Are The Types Of Contacts Used In Carbon Ink PCB?

There are three types of contacts applied in the design and manufacture of Carbon Ink PCB namely:

  • Kupfer
  • Solder mask opening
  • Carbon-Tinte

The rules of design are specific and emphasize on having a minimum spacing of 0.8mm amongst the elements of copper of a characteristic carbon finger contacts.

With the advancement in Carbon Ink PCB manufacturing technology, the minimum values can be greatly reduced with the lead time being longer.

What Are The Properties Of The Carbon Ink Used In Carbon Ink PCB Manufacture?

There are three properties of carbon used in the PCB:

This can be described as the intensity of the external forces of the carbon ink.

This is the most crucial printing property of the ink and is reciprocal of viscosity.

This is a liquids internal friction.

It can also be described as a liquids mechanical resistance between various layers.

Viscous strength is higher in thicker liquids compared to thinner liquids. It is heavily dependent on temperature.

This can be described as a liquids physical property that enables it to reestablish its initial structure.

It allows its internal structures to be reconstructed and is preferred for screen printing.

How Is Sheet Resistance Measured In A Carbon Ink PCB?

Sheet resistance can be described as the deposited film resistance which has a uniform thickness.

To reduce the chances of contact resistance, a four-point probe is used to measure it.

Basically, the two probes are supplied with constant current while measuring the potential of the remaining two probes using a voltmeter with a high impedance rating.

Another way is to have the opposite edges of a square on the Carbon Ink PCB supplied with bus bars and measuring the resistance across the square area.

What Are The Manufacturing Challenges Of Carbon Ink PCB?

Exposed Copper

Carbon bridges and Carbon oil buttons can commonly be found on the single layer Carbon Ink PCB.

Copper can be easily exposed during production when it is placed beneath the carbon oil buttons.

To avoid exposure of copper, it is advisable to shrink the carbon keyboard after cutting the lamination and just before printing.

If the shrinkage treatment does not occur prior to printing,

then shrinkage will happen after application of green solder mask, etching and during the bridge process of carbon oil.

Current leakages are mainly caused by the copper powder situated between the lines.

The copper powder stays between the lines because of the intensity of the grinding pressure and wrong direction.

No adverse effect is produced by the copper powder if the Carbon Ink PCB exists in a dry surrounding.

However, humid environments tend to lead to micro-short circuits during the process of electroplating.

Green Oil Solder Mask

Due to the heavy presence of garbage found in bridge oil and green oil, conductivity occurs.

To counter this, the screen mesh size used in the bridge oil should not be very small (normally 90-120T).

The environment surrounding it should also be very clean.

What Is The Benefit Of Adding Conductive Carbon Ink To Finished PCB?

Conductive carbon Ink can be added to a completed PCB board with the sole aim of providing it with a tough and durable interface with a different mechanical component like a key.

The two distinct ways of achieving this are:

  • Superficial copper contact is raised above the PCB surface
  • Contacts of the PCB are shielded from debris and contaminants.
